Author's Statement
For as long as I can remember, I have loved creating imaginative stories and worlds in my head. I started writing fiction when I was in elementary school. I had a difficult family situation during my childhood and young adult life but instead of using writing as an outlet I lost my way. With time, I was able to find my way back. Nearly a decade after graduating high school, I enrolled in college and re-discovered my love for reading and writing. The first short story I wrote was published in my community college's literary journal and was awarded third place in the fiction category. This was an amazing achievement, but I know I still have a lot of room to grow as a writer. I enjoy writing fiction the most, but also love to write poetry and non-fiction. I am graduating summa cum laude from George Mason University with my Bachelor's degree in English Literature May 2022.
I created a twine story which offers two branches of connected haiku. It is entitled "LOVE" because they touch on this concept from different points of view. Not only do they attempt to capture romantic love, but they also convey the difficult and constant struggle to maintain self-love. All the photos seen in the twine story are my own, selected to enhance the effect of each haiku. I also created my first e-book, Aspire Higher, which offers an eclectic collection of short stories. The stories are not connected by a common theme, but instead were chosen to show a variety of concepts and imagery. It includes a short story based on my own experience with sleep paralysis, "Manifestation," a short story based on Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House which serves as a prequel, "Fight and Flight," a musing about my cat, "An Ode to Alfred," my first short story which was previously published in a school journal, "Living with a Wolf," and an account of a personal experience through the eyes of someone else who was there, "A Perfect Morning." Enjoy!
